The Fluid Dynamics Laboratory utilizes the Mach 5 shock tunnel at New Mexico State University to conduct advanced hypersonic flow experiments and research.
The Mach 5 shock tunnel features a 5.2-meter-long driver tube with an inner diameter of 88.9 mm, using nitrogen as the driver gas. The driven tube measures 6 meters in length with an inner diameter of 101.6 mm. Before entering the nozzle, the flow makes a 90-degree turn. At the nozzle throat, the flow path narrows to 101.6 mm in width and 2.97 mm in height, then expands to a square test section measuring 101.6 mm × 101.6 mm.
